WHAT IT'S ABOUT:
French opera star and recording artist David Serero takes you on a journey of biblical proportions, as he stars in the American Sephardi Federation production of Giuseppe Verdi’s Nabucco at the Center for Jewish History. Verdi’s breakthrough work debuted at La Scala in 1842 and portrays the epic struggle of the Jews against the oppression of Babylon’s King Nebuchadnezzar, which echoes Italy’s nationalist conflict with Austria at the time. Sung in Italian and filled with romance and drama, the opera’s grand and gorgeous music features famed numbers like “Immenso Jehova” (the Hebrew slaves’ triumphant hymn of thanksgiving), plus one of opera’s most famous choruses, “Va pensiero,” considered by many to be Italy’s unofficial national anthem.
