Filetti @ 'The Convent' - This is the kind of art I can fuck with
What’s it about?
Six women go on a retreat to a convent and love like nuns for a few days.
Let’s talk about this show.
I’ll be honest, walking in, I saw the medieval stone arches and the cloud projections on the walls and I thought: Okay… religion. I’m gonna be open-minded and enjoy myself.
Bring it, Jesus. 🙏🏼 Let’s go.
Y’all, my expectations could not have been more wrong. I was pleasantly surprised to see these beautiful women talk about women’s bodies, relationships and history. And not under a man named Jesus, but under their own female Gods. Specifically, Mother Abbess.
This is her —> 👩🏼
She runs a women’s retreat in a convent in France. A convent that doesn’t quite run on religion, but rather on spirituality (although sometimes these overlap). The point is, the women that attend the retreat are:
& my fave, 👧🏻 Tina.
These women come from different walks of life — 👰🏽👩🏻🎓👩🏼⚕️👩🏼🎤👩🏻💻 — you know what I’m saying? Diverse backgrounds = diverse views. Clinks to that! 🥂
While getting drunk and eating grapes, they discuss the fascinating history of convents. Convents used to be a place for women who wanted to become educated in a man’s world. In return for their education, they became celibate and were locked in a convent. Like?!?! These women were so smart!
They also talked about how religion’s history has doomed it to be completely male-centric. It tends to exclude female perspectives and reduces them to Virgin Marys or Mary Magdalenes. The virgins or the sluts. Speaking of sex, these girls talk about it. 🌚 A lot. But not in a raunchy, lustful manner. Rather in a beautiful, empowering and accepting manner. Watching them take control of their sensual power was inspiring. I literally went home and took more agency in my love life instead of waiting for something to happen. Mhmm… 🔙🔛🔝
I cannot emphasize enough how refreshing this play is!! Please go!! See for yourself!!
