POST: 'Night is a Room' - I couldn't believe it
What's it about?
Liana and Marcus are a happily married couple, but their relationship becomes shaky when he has a surprise reunion with his biological mother for his 40th birthday.
What'd I experience?
Whenever I write these articles, I like to take the reader on my journey throughout the day. This article, however, is going to be a little different because this time, I gotta jump right into it.
This show was weird, and saying that is an understatement. It was far from what I was expecting based on the description I read prior to the show. I was thinking, Cool. A show about love and how it reunites and ruins relationships. Sounds interesting.
It was interesting all right.
The show opened up with Liana speaking to her husband’s biological mother, Dore. She planned a surprise get together for the two for his 40th birthday. In that moment, I felt like I could relate to Liana. She was a kind, thoughtful optimist just like me, and nothing weird happened yet. Dore agreed under the condition that it was her and her son, so the two could relate on a familial level. No foreigners, that type of thing. Sounded a bit sus, but I didn’t think much of it. I still had my eye on her though. #shady
The mother and son have a couple of meetings alone, and after some time, they move their meetings to the couple’s home. This is when shit started to get a bit crazy. Before Dore got there, Marcus put his hand down Liana’s pants, and I’ll let you figure out the rest. With that, I knew this play was going to be far from G rated. The weirdness only continued, Dore tells Liana a story about her dream, which apparently was the perfect segue into revealing her relationship with Marcus. My jaw dropped. I couldn’t believe it, and neither could Liana. Could you blame her? Even I would think it was a joke. Nice one guys, but that’s not funny.
From there on, I had my mouth wide open and watched each character like a ping pong match because, let’s be honest, shit was about to go down. The two tried to convince her that the relationship was in fact real, and they really get the message across when the mother son duo make out. This wasn’t like a peck. It was a full on makout sesh. I was flabbergasted and looked away at that point because I was extremely weirded out. That’s not something you see every day. Is everyone seeing this?
Dore leaves the two to talk it out, and Liana was beyond upset. She was confused, angry, and in shock. Who wouldn’t be? I’d probably feel all of that and some. Her husband was cheating with his OWN MOTHER, and she was the one who got them together. Talk about a hit below the belt. Marcus tried to explain himself, and this was probably the part that angered me the most. He passed it off as a normal, common thing called Sexual Genetic Attraction (S.G.A). It sounded like total bullshit. It doesn’t even SOUND real. When it was clear that Liana wasn’t hearing it, Marcus began to blame her for getting them together in the first place. REALLY? I was beyond speechless at that point, and not in a good way.
Liana was losing her husband and her life was crumbling right in front of her. I felt her pain as she yelled and the bitterness from the hurt he was causing. He ended up leaving Liana to live with Dore, and it was beyond heartbreaking to watch. Annnnndddd……cue fifteen minute intermission.
I sat back and listened to the various chats going on around me. One that caught my ear was between two women behind me, speaking about Marcus' character. Can I just say that things got pretty heated? One woman said he was weak, and the other woman quickly responded that he wasn't weak. He was sick. Disgusting even. I was like ohhhh snap.....things are getting CAH-RAY-ZEE up in here. The two agreed to disagree, but there was still so much tension in the air. Talk about awkward.
The audience is then transported to a funeral. Marcus’ funeral.
What the heck is going on in this play? That escalated way too quickly.
Dore and Liana talked about Marcus’ last days, and it was clear that after all that time, Liana’s world fell apart. She lost everything from her job to basic hygiene. Dore spoke honestly and genuinely, and it was hard not to love that about her character. I was against her actions, but she cared about Liana and her wellbeing. I had respect for that.
Liana, still bitter over everything that transpired, tried anything she could to inflict pain on Dore. She insulted her, tried taking away her home, and in desperation, strangled her to death. I was on Team Liana, but she got a little too cray for my taste. Dore survived the strangulation, to Liana's dismay, and told her that in order to reach a mother son relationship, the two had to be in a relationship first. Haha. Yeah......Okaaaaayy.
The two continued to speak, and Liana slowly took a liking to Dore. She became nicer and tried helping her in any way that she could. What is this madness? The two decided to live together, and then, it was over. What kind of crazy shit is this? Marcus' mom steals Liana's husband, and when he dies, her and Liana live together happily ever after? I tried telling my friends about this craziness, trying to make sense of it, and I'm still talking about it today. What do I do with an ending like that? I'm flabbergasted and confused and discombobulated. I honestly don't even know how to end this article. The end?
